HALONG BAY

The nearly 2000 islands are spectacular in their beauty. (I have heard numbers varying from 1000 to 3000 islands, I’ve never counted them but 2000 seems like a reasonable number.) Prepare to take a lot of pictures.
You can enjoy sea-kayaking or swimming from your hotel-boat. The water is clear during the spring and early summer. Water is warm enough to swim year round. Caution: There are strong currents in the area and can pull you away from the boat if you’re not careful – from my own experience.
The islands feature endless numbers of beaches, grottoes, and caves. Several have very large caves and are well worth visiting. Kayaks and small sampans are available to take you on a panoramic journey of the bay with visits to some of the caves and grottoes.
On-shore hotels are available with day cruises, but an over-night or 2 night/3day cruise is the only way to enjoy these sites for the fast moving or laid-back tourist. There is a resort area on the windward shore is known as Bai Chay.
Bai Chay is a low gently sloping range of hills that run along the sea for more than 2 kilometers. Among the pine trees are large hotels and small villas with distinguished architectural styles. A pine tree lined road follows the white sandy beach leading to unique hotels, small villas and family-owned cafes.
