Hoian was one of the major trading centers of Southeast Asia in the 16th century. Its history is influenced by Chinese, Japanese as well as native Vietnamese. Its narrow streets and tile roofed buildings are occupied by small tailor shops and restaurants catering to the tourist trade. Explore the ancient Japanese Bridge and learn about making silk fabric – from the silk worm to the loom. There are cooking and handicraft classes available. Hoian is a base for visiting My Son, Marble Mountain and China Beach as well as river and beach tours. My Son is the site of the ruins of the 4th Century Champa Kingdom. It is now open at night; the ruins are a great site at night. Tours are available by tour bus round trip or tour bus to the ruins and return by river boat. The river boat may stop at the pottery and woodcrafters' villages. A visit to Marble Mountain, 15 kilometers away, includes a strenuous hike up the mountain to Buddhist shrines located in the caves and nice view of China Beach to the east. As you leave, visit the stone carver shops as the base of the mountain. Here you can purchase the smallest of marble souvenirs to fit in your purse or a set of two-ton lions to guard your front door at home. Motorbikes, bicycles, cyclos and small tour boats are available to explore Hoian and its nearby surroundings. If you would like a leisurely river boat ride by sure to ask for my good friend, “Captain Dan” at 68 Bach Dang Street on the river front. CAPTAIN DAN'S TOUR BOAT Captain Dan's Tour Boat . He once took several companions and me up river to an isolated village where the local natives had never seen white people. Two of my fellow travelers were blonds – they caused quite a stir. Be sure you don’t miss Hoian. Leave a little extra space in your bag for a bit of custom tailored clothing or maybe duffle bag for a whole new wardrobe. I’ve seen people wrestling huge suitcases as they leave town or headed for the post office to ship their ‘goodies’ home. There are other souvenirs aside from clothes – silk lanterns and scarves, wood carvings and furniture, or the memory of outstanding local cuisine. HAVE YOU TRAVELED TO HOIAN?
