1) Map: Periplus Travel Map. For travel planning and traveling in Vietnam I recommend the Periplus Travel Map. I’ve carried the same one for 5 years. It’s a bit out of date, admittedly. The current edition is 2005/2006. It’s compact and durable. Folds flat to about 10.5 inches to 4.5 inches. Fits into a day pack just fine. >>

2) Language Map: Vietnamese Language Map. This isn’t really a map but a fold up reference guide for quick translations. Covers Meeting people, Asking Questions, Numbers, Telephone & Internet, Mail, Calendar and Time, Shopping, Alphabet basics, Hotels, Money, Emergencies, Sightseeing, Transportation, and Dining Out. Same size as the Periplus map.
3) Picture Talk Book: Langenscheidt’s Picture Talk. This recommendation, unfortunately, is out of print. If you can find a reasonably priced copy, I urge you to acquire it. Originally priced at $5.95, I’ve seen them priced at over $30.00 (??). This is a must have for anyone who travels to any area of the world where English is not commonly spoken. A 4” x6” spiral bound book makes a good three piece combo with the above 2 recommendations.>>

The Rough Guide to Vietnam is a great guide for those who like to travel independently and learn about the diversity of Vietnam. It has easy to follow directions and descriptions of Vietnam’s many sights. From Halong Bay and Sapa in the north, south to Hoian, Nha Trang, Dalat, and Saigon and the Mekong Delta in the south.
How to Pack: For the Carry-On Traveler on a budget tour. Not for the Backpacker/Trekker planning on roughing it for parts of the trip. Just so you don’t look like you climbed out of a laundry bag. Check my GEAR PAGE for a list of items to consider for a trip to Vietnam.
